On January 1st, 1901, without war or revolution, the self-governing colonies of Great Britain became the federated states within the Commonwealth of Australia.
From the day when Captain Arthur Phillip finally landed at Sydney Cove on January 26, 1788, with the First Fleet, it was inevitable that His Majesty King George III’s penal colony in New South Wales would one day become a nation.
It is just as inevitable that one day the nation of Australia will become a Republic, with an Australian replacing the British Monarch as Head of State .
Australians are all too aware aware that over past decades, there has been much discussion and debate about Australian Republicanism. But it is not a new discussion.
Many will be surprised that this discussion dates back to the mid 1800’s, and is as old as the move to nationhood itself. And it is as contentious today as it was then. In recent times there has been one major vexatious issue:
Should an Australian Head of State be elected by the people of Australia or should the Head of State be appointed by the Prime Minister /Federal Government?
Both models have their supporters who have a strong and unshakable belief that their solution is the correct one.
This site will put forward an alternative model which will bring both groups of supporters closer together and ultimately to Australia becoming a republic.
In the case put forward, it would a be method unique to Australia, where the Electorate of Australia will put forward candidates for their elected Representatives to make the final decision on who shall be the Head of State.
The model has been put into several section and each section has a dedicated webpage:
1. Introduction to the State Election Model (SEM)
2. Candidate Selection
3. Representative Election
4. Selection of an Australian Head of State
5. Considerations – Such as dismissal, length of term, and other issues
6. A Petition of Support
With a belief that together Australians can create a model acceptable to the majority of Australians in the majority of States, please feel free to add comments that will contribute to the discussion at the bottom of each respective page.
Now is the time where all Australians can have a say in the way in how Australia moves to a Republic.
All Australians should take ownership of this important responsibility. To step away from this decision now, will allow future generations to create a Republic of their choosing, one in which which the Australians of today will possibly have no say at all.

Yes! It is time for Australians to accept the responsibility of the Head of State being an Australian… This is an interesting concept and makes sense
Just a a quick question. Under the current constitution could the queen choose to perform all the functions of the Governor General when she is in Australia? In NZ I think she can carry out all the NZ GG’s duties.
Hi Bill, Thanks for adding the comment and question.
Answer: I don’t know — and in my quick hunt around the web did not find an answer. However, I suspect that there would be no reason she couldn’t, should she choose to.
Hi there Republican – please keep posting! Brilliant website.
I really like what you wrote. I am happy that I managed to end up here instead of some junky blog. Thank you!
@ LJ Holden — thanks for the support!
@ Bill Jay — see Royal Powers Act 1953 – http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/cth/consol_act/rpa1953177/s2.html
When the Monarch is in Australia she can carry out any of the powers of the GG . ( but only on the Advice of the Federal Executive Council )
At the begining of the first article it seems to imply that Australia became a Nation in 1901 ! Not so it became a single British Colony ( with six States ) .
A good concept. And it is high time an Australian became the Head Of State in Australia.
Wish you all the best.
@ Jon Lee
Funny that –even though they say she doesn’t have the powers, she actually does. So, here’s a question. If Charles should take the time to visit his mothers’ subjects in Aus as her representative, can he exercise those powers on her behalf?
Thanks for the info!

Republic by the people for the people – that’s fine as long as our financial system ie: central bank is not privatised by some elite, faceless, supreme being/s whom have no sovereignty but their own. Our Government transacts the money and only our Government transacts the money.
For Republic Democratic Australia to work, our head of state and banking system MUST be controlled by Government and Government controlled by the people for the people.
Take away any one of these factors and we can expect the tyranny the American citizens are living with presently.
Due to their excercised experiments and impeccable results of the operations the elitists have gained over the past decade, we the citizens must take up our own resourcefulness as individuals to make these critical decisions with utmost precision and delicate implementation.
One slip of the scalpel, so to speak, will be absolute disaster for every Australian man, woman and child. Sometimes citizen power is and may well be expected to help the cause.
In conclusion, let me say, we are at the precipice of change. It has been decades of influence and fraudulent attacks upon the citizens by the elitists and now they have almost all the aces. These years we are living now will determine our fate of freedom or enslavement. Lets unite and stand as a righteous and Self Governing Nation we deserve and born to be.
I hope this sparks some fire in your bellies and help those of us that have more resources than others, to ramp up the Australian Republic campaign. I believe its time to play out our last stand and quash those who seek to destroy our Nation.
@ Republic Australia
Hi RA,
Yes, agreed — the Reserve Bank must be controlled and operated by “the people”, not be a private entity controlled by faceless owners.
How would you go about ensuring that is controlled in a democratic way — by the people?
Thanks for your comment.
